In a significant shift for the cryptocurrency industry, Kraken, a top U.S. crypto exchange, has officially established its new headquarters in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Announced on June 20, 2025, this strategic shift highlights Wyoming’s reputation as a pro-bitcoin haven, driven by its supportive laws and low-tax environment. After leaving San Francisco over three years ago, Kraken operated without a physical base—until now. This relocation marks a new chapter for the exchange and the state’s growing role in the crypto industry.

Wyoming has become a magnet for blockchain businesses thanks to its forward-thinking policies. The state boasts over 30 crypto-specific laws, including the recognition of digital assets as property and protections for private keys. Senator Cynthia Lummis, a staunch Bitcoin advocate, has played a key role in shaping this environment. Kraken’s leadership praised these regulations, noting their collaboration with Wyoming institutions like the University of Wyoming, where they donated $300,000 for crypto education. This partnership, along with co-hosting the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, cemented the state’s appeal.

The decision also hinges on Wyoming’s tax benefits. With no individual or corporate income tax and exemptions on crypto-related taxes, the state offers a cost-effective base for crypto firms. Kraken’s move aligns with its goal to deepen its U.S. presence while leveraging a regulatory framework tailored for digital assets. Most employees will continue working remotely, but the physical HQ in Cheyenne signals a long-term commitment.

Here’s what Kraken’s CEO, Dave Ripley, shared on X:

@krakenfx 'moving on up' to HQ in Wyoming. The state’s clear rules, 30+ crypto statutes, and @SenLummis steadfast BTC advocacy have made it a leader in legitimizing the asset class.

For us, it’s the same global team and a new homebase from which to drive crypto adoption…

This relocation could inspire other crypto companies to follow suit, boosting Wyoming’s economy and solidifying its status as a crypto hub.
